Introduction

Journal of Sustainable Dryland Agricultural Systems (JoSDAS) is an international open-access online scientific journal (e-ISSN: 2807-1727) published by the Post-Graduate Program of the University of Mataram in Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia. The journal consists of one volume per year with two issues published in June (issue #1) and December (issue #2), and if possible, the frequency will be increased to up to four issues per year. The journal currently accepts only research papers.

Structure of the manuscript

The manuscript to be submitted to the Journal of Sustainable Dryland Agricultural Systems will be divided into two files, i.e. title page (preferably in PDF, but can be in DOC or DOCX format) and the subsequent blind paper (with no author names), which is the main submission file, and it has to be in Microsoft Word format (DOC or DOCX). The title page contains the paper title, the author(s) and the affiliation(s), email address of the corresponding author, short running title, abstract, and information on the roles of each author listed in the authorship. The article text (main manuscript) is the main paper which contains no author names to be sent to the reviewers for the double-blind peer review process. The contents of the title page are as follows.

TITLE PAGE:

  • The paper title (maximum of 25 words)
  • Name(s) of the author(s)
  • Affiliation of each author or affiliation of all authors of the same affiliation
  • E-mail address of the corresponding author
  • Short running title (maximum of 70 characters including spaces)
  • Abstract (maximum of 250 words)
  • Keywords consisting of maximum of 5 words or phrases separated with semicolon (;)
  • Roles (level of contribution) of each author and his/her email address.

THE MAIN ARTICLE

Article format

The main article must contain the article title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgement (if any), Authorship (roles of each author by specifying Author1, Author2, etc. without name), and References. The journal admin will also assign an article-ID for easy handling.

The title of the paper must be informative of the article contents but it must be kept as short as possible with the total of words of no more than 25 words. For the name of an uncommon organism listed in the title of the paper, it has to be followed with its scientific name in brackets.

The Abstract must contain between 200 words and a maximum of 250 words, including a very brief introduction extracted from the Introduction of the paper without showing the cited references. This is followed with the objective of the study, the methods used, if possible in a bit detailed explanation, including the design of the experiment for an experimental research or design of the survey for a survey research, and if needed, this should be followed with the research variables and the data analysis applied. Finally the author(s) must describe the findings of the research that were discussed in the Results and Discussion followed with the conclusion and implications or recommendations (if any). The author(s) must be able to extract the significant findings from the research to be listed in the abstract to make the abstract more informative and attractive to the readers, which could make the readers more curious to read and download the entire research paper.

The Introduction must contain between a minimum of 800 words and a maximum of 1000 words. In the Introduction section, the author(s) have to explain the importance of the research being reported in the manuscript, what findings have been found in the literature and the background why this research was important to be conducted. The introduction section consists of several paragraphs, and does not contain tables or figures. The Introduction section must be concluded with the objective of the research in one paragraph.

The Materials and Methods must completely explain the entire research especially the steps and the procedures used, but in sufficiently brief, with the total number of words ranging from 500 to a maximum of 800 words (if possible). All procedures used including the techniques of data analysis have to be explained in this section.

The Results and Discussion section must contain 2200-3000 words. If needed for clarity of the presentation of this section, the author(s) can also divide this section into several sub-sections, for example in the case of experiment using a certain crop, this section can be divided into the effects of the treatments on growth of the crop, and the effects of the treatments on yield components of the crop. The tables must be typed in single space using the Insert Table in the Word processing software or copy-pasted tables from a spreadsheet, but please make sure that each unit of the data must be in one cell of the table or one merged cells of the table. The figures must be presented in a clear enough with a sufficiently high resolution but can be fitted in the page width without loosing any information details. Small figures can be presented side-by-side to efficiently use the page width. The Results and Discussion section should be concluded with a closing paragraph that summarizes the entire section or a paragraph containing the practical implication of the research results or further studies needed for better understanding the phenomena, etc.

The Conclusion is the summary of the results and discussion in accordance with the research objective(s). The author(s) can also include here some implications of the results, but this section must be brief enough, with a total number of words must be no longer than 90 words, but the sentence must not be exactly repeated in the Abstract.

The Acknowledgement is used to acknowledge any individuals and entities who have significantly contributed to the research, especially to the funding agencies involved.

The Authorship is used to explain contributions of each author. For example: “all authors had participated in running the field experiment, field measurement, data compilation, and preparation of the manuscript”. Author #3 and Author #4 did the field measurements the experimental plants and conducting data tabulation, Author #2 was the main contact person with the funding agency and presentation of research results and prepared initial draft using Indonesia language; Author #1 designed the entire research project including the field experiment and layout, ran statistical data analyses, translated to English, and finished writing the English manuscript, submitted the manuscript, and completed the revisions".

The References section is used to list all cited references in the text. In the References, all author must be listed, and the last author must be separated by “, & “ (coma+space+&+space) from the previous author(s), including for an article written by two authors. The author(s) are strongly recommended to use the Mendeley or Zotero or EndNote reference manager in preparing the manuscript so that all the citations can be found by the readers, the reviewers, and more importantly by cross-referencing software to count the citations of an article, to report the number of articles citing this article or vice-verse. Please consult the brief format of the referencing style of APA 7th Edition that can be downloaded from https://aut.ac.nz.libguides.com/ld.php?content_id=48644747. As much as possible all the references should be able to be found in the internet by the Reviewers; therefore, they should have the hyperlink such as URL and/or the article DOI; so, the author(s) should use a reference manager to prepare the References.

Some of the examples of how to cite refernces in the text are as follows. To use the style of writing the reference at the end of a sentence or paragraph using APA 7th for an article written by more than two authors please use “et al.” after the last name of the first author (Ewert et al., 2014), or according to Ewert et al. (2014)…. Citing more than one article at the end of a sentence or paragraph should be listed chronologically from the oldest to the newest reference (Easton, 2008; Wangiyana et al., 2019; Dulur et al., 2020), but articles of the same authors of different publication dates is like this (Wangiyana, 2004; 2009). However, citing two articles of the same author(s) published in the same year is like this (Wangiyana et al., 2021a,b), while citing an article written by two authors is like this (Aryana & Wangiyana, 2016), but when citing in the text, … according to Aryana and Wangiyana (2016), both authors must be listed…

The example of the reference list in the References to list those references mentioned in the above paragraph is as follows. Please note that the last author has to be separated from the previous author(s) using “, & “ (coma-space-&-space).
