The Relevansi Pengetahuan Masyarakat dengan Sains Ilmiah pada Rumah Adat Desa Beleq Sembalun Lawang

Abstract

The role of local wisdom in building cultural and national identity has very
important relevance in a society. By studying ethnoscience, we can
understand different cultural ways of thinking and perspectives in explaining
scientific phenomena. One of the local wisdoms in West Nusa Tenggara is
the traditional house of Beleq Village. This traditional house has a roof
made of reeds and poles and walls made of bamboo. The use of natural
materials as building materials by the Sembalun community has its own
philosophy and reasons. The aim of this research is to obtain more detailed
information regarding the relevance of public knowledge and scientific
knowledge regarding the use of reeds and bamboo as building materials for
traditional houses in Beleq Village. The method used is a qualitative
method. The results of this research show that use of reeds as a roof is able
toreverse the temperature. This is in line with sacientific knowledge
regarding the ability of alang-alang as an insulator in the thermal insulation
process. Apart from that, the use of bamboo as poles, walls and roof trusses
for traditional houses has the ability to provide the strongest support and at
that time bamboo was easy to find. This is in line with scientific knowledge
regarding bamboo's ability to be a sustainable plant and become stronger if
dried. So, it can be concluded that there is relevance between public
knowledge an scientific science.
