Abstract
Mathematics learning in elementary schools often faced difficulties because students had limited understanding of basic mathematical concepts and learning activities were still dominated by conventional methods. This study aimed to describe the implementation and effectiveness of interactive tutoring in optimizing basic mathematics learning for elementary school students. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach combined with a community service program using an interactive tutoring model. The activity involved 20 elementary school students in grades III–V in Aikmel Utara Village and was conducted through eight meetings over four weeks. Learning activities included the use of simple teaching aids, number cards, educational games, mathematical quizzes, group exercises, and question-and-answer sessions. Data were collected through participatory observation, pre-tests and post-tests, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the average student score increased from 58.4 in the pre-test to 82.6 in the post-test, representing an increase of 24.2 points. The average N-Gain score was 0.58, which was categorized as moderate. In addition, students demonstrated increased participation, enthusiasm, motivation, and confidence during the learning activities. Therefore, interactive tutoring was effective in optimizing basic mathematics learning and could be implemented as an alternative learning strategy for elementary school students, particularly in areas with limited access to modern learning media.
